Understanding the Link Between Trauma and Addiction

Trauma and addiction are often closely linked, with people who have experienced traumatic events being more likely to develop addictive behaviours (Source NIH).

At Liberty Home, a secondary care facility, we understand the deep connection between trauma and addiction, which is why we provide a personal approach to people as they navigate their recovery journey.

We understand that trauma can take many forms, including physical, emotional, psychological, sexual abuse, grief, neglect, bullying, and more. The result of these events can leave people feeling helpless, overwhelmed, and hopeless.

A potential reason why people turn to drugs, alcohol, or even food is that they can produce temporary pleasure and numb pain/negative emotions (sources: NIH, Science Direct).

However, while these substances may give people temporary relief from their trauma, they can potentially worsen the problem in the long term. Substance use can lead to addiction, leading to further trauma and creating a vicious cycle that can be difficult to break. But, with the right support, individuals can overcome their trauma and addiction and live healthier and happier lives.

At Liberty Home, we provide a welcoming, caring, understanding and empathetic environment for people who have experienced trauma and addiction. Our sober living homes are designed to support individuals as they work towards recovery. Our compassionate and highly trained staff deeply understand the relationship between trauma and addiction and are committed to helping our patients heal from their experiences.

In addition to providing a safe and supportive environment, we offer tailored treatments designed to help individuals address their trauma and addiction. These include community group sessions, support groups, physical activity, one on one therapy, therapeutic duties and volunteer programs.

Community is a big part of the recovery process, which is why we also provide a variety of recreational activities to go along with our various support groups for people to connect with others on a similar journey.

Our halfway house provides a structured and supportive environment that allows individuals to practice the skills they have learned in their recovery journey in a real-world setting.

At Liberty Home, we understand that recovery is not a one-size-fits-all process. That’s why we work closely with each individual to create a personalised approach that addresses their unique needs and goals. Our goal is to help individuals overcome their trauma and addiction and build a fulfilling and sustainable life in sobriety.

At Liberty Home, we believe that a better future is possible for individuals who have experienced trauma and addiction. Our compassionate and highly trained staff and supportive living environments provide the foundation for individuals to heal and build a brighter future.
